Best Management Practices:
Scorpions Scorpions have the ability to inflict a painful sting with their venom. Scorpions can be in almost any location but they are a particular problem in the South and Southwest. Most of the poisonous scorpions live in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and Utah. Scorpions are a nocturnal creature and forage for other insects. They are also the target of other insects, birds and other animals.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plays a huge role in the control of scorpions. Monitoring with glue traps like the Catchmaster Mouse & Insect Glue Board, Trapper LTD Glue Board or the Trapper Max Glue Board are also an effective indoor non-pesticide control. IPM procedures also call for the removal of scorpion haunts like yard clutter, e.g. piles of trash, rocks, boards, firewood stored directly on the ground and landscape timbers.
After IPM procedures have been followed and a determination is made that there is a problem to be controlled, then the proper pesticide may be utilized. Control can be completed by adding two additional techniques, a perimeter treatment and an indoor application of the proper insecticide.
A perimeter treatment may be accomplished by applying and using the proper application rate for one of the following: Cyronara 9.7, Demon Max Insecticide, Prelude , Demon WP, Demand CS Insecticide or Talstar One Insecticide. These products have been shown to be effective against scorpions. At the proper application rates they may be applied to outdoor area woodpiles, rock piles, areas around foundations, mulch in flower and shrub beds, building sidings and an area of approximately 5 to 10 feet surrounding the building. Outdoors these applications maybe applied with a Gilmour Airmatc Hose End or one of the Spray Doc 2 Gallon sprayer. Allow the treatment to completely dry before allowing pets or anyone into the area. Do not spray during wind conditions and wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, a particle mask and a protective hat. Indoor treatments may be completed by using a Spray Doc 1 Gallon sprayer to apply either Demon WP, Demand CS Insecticide, Suspend SC Insecticide or Talstar One Insecticide. Treat the cracks and crevices in woodwork, wall voids, crawl spaces, the closets, around plumbing, doorways and windows, baseboards, basements, garages, porches, foyers, bathrooms and other living areas.
As with all pest control products, follow product label directions, safety procedures and wear proper safety equipment.
