Spiders

The Black Widow is quiet distinct with her shiny black body and the bright red/orange hourglass on her abdomen.  Males are smaller, lighter in color, with light streaks on the abdomen. Their web is irregular, many times found along exterior foundations on slabs, under stones and rocks, behind shrubs. They do not usually frequent indoors.  The bite is a sharp pain, like a needle puncture. After 15 minutes to an hour, there will be muscular cramps. Bites are rarely fatal, but you should seek medical attention.

The Brown Recluse is yellow to dark brown with a dark brown violin shaped marking. Their web is normally an off white to Gray in color. Brown Recluse can be found both outdoors and indoors. They are nocturnal and prefer storage areas, closets, basements, attics, garages, cellars, around ceiling duct works or registers. The initial bite is not intense, but poisonous.  Normally after 8-12 hours, the pain becomes intense and in a few days, large sores form leaving a disfiguring scar. You should seek immediate medical treatment after the bite.
Catchmaster Mouse & Insect Glue Board, Trapper LTD Glue Board and Trapper Max Glue Board are used to not only monitor but to reduce spider populations.  They are an effective tool and part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to control all spiders.

Perimeter treatments are extremely effective in spider control and may be applied with a power sprayer, Gilmour Airmatc Hose End Sprayer, Spray Doc 1 Gallon Premium SprayerECHO MS-4 Sprayer or ECHO MS-40 Sprayer.  Excellent products for a perimeter treatment are Demon Max Insecticideand Prelude.   Apply to outdoor woodpiles, rocky areas, building sidings and a minimum of a 5 to 10 area around structures, including the home.  Do not allow pets or people to be in the area until it completely dries.  Do not spray during wind conditions and wear protective attire.  In addition, this also makes a great yard spray for a variety of pest and acts as a perimeter treatment barrier when sprayed on yard, exterior buildings sidings, walkways and driveways.

The Gilmour Spray Doc may be used to apply a quality residual pesticide.  Recommended products for spider control are Cyronara 9.7,  Demon WP, Cynoff WP, Demand CS Insecticide, Suspend SC Insecticide, Talstar One Insecticide, Onslaught CS Insecticide.  Mix according to product label and spray around entry points like doors and windows, spray along baseboards, ceiling moldings, in basements and attics, around light fixtures, around outlets and in garages.  Also, spray the upper trim moldings, paying particular attention to corners where they may web and rest.

Aerosols provide a convenient option and quality aerosols include CB D - Force, 565 Plus XLO, CB Air Devil HPX, Perma-Dust and CY Kick.  Use them to treat cracks and crevices, apply along baseboards, window areas and doorframes, corners, pipes, basements, garages and other areas where spiders may frequent. They provide a quick opportunity all in one package and are extremely portable.

Dusts are excellent for attics, wall voids and other areas that are not normally disturbed or have traffic.  Dusts may be dispensed with the JT Eaton 530 Duster.  Spiders often invade the home from the attic.  When insecticide dusts like Delta Dust  and Tempo 1% Dust are properly applied, they are an effective treatment.  Take care to use a particle mask, protective clothing, goggles and keeping yourself clear of the dust particles.

A home that has been properly treated for general pest control will have fewer spiders or unsightly spider webs.  Spiders may be controlled with proper care and treatment by utilizing IPM and both indoor and outdoor perimeter control techniques.

As with all pest control products, follow labeled directions and safety procedures and wear proper safety equipment.
