Control Kleingrass in Coastal Bermuda using Pastora

Step-by-step plan to control Kleingrass in Coastal Bermuda using Pastora

Step 1, Mow before spring green-up.

  • When: Late February to early March (before Bermuda starts greening up).

  • Height: 1.5 to 2 inches stubble height.

  • Goal: Clean up old growth, open the canopy, and help the spring herbicide contact the Kleingrass.

Step 2, Fertilize for Bermuda competition.

  • When: At spring green-up, typically late March to April, depending on temperatures.

  • Product: A 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer is a solid choice for Bermuda.

  • Note: Strong Bermuda growth is part of the “control program,” it helps crowd out Kleingrass after it gets set back.

Step 3, Apply Pastora at the highest labeled rate per application.

  • When to spray: Late April through June, when Kleingrass is actively growing and about 8 to 18 inches tall, before it gets too mature and tough.

  • Rate (broadcast): 1.5 oz per acre per application in established bermudagrass. (NCBA ExpoCAD)

  • Adjuvant: Non-ionic surfactant (NIS) at 0.25% v/v (that is 1 quart per 100 gallons of spray mix). Pastora applications must include a surfactant. (Greenbook)

  • Spray volume: 15 to 20 gallons per acre by ground rig for coverage (more volume helps on grasses).

  • Technique: Uniform coverage, calibrated sprayer, steady speed/pressure, avoid skips and overlaps.

Step 4, Plan on a second application.

  • How many applications: Two applications is the realistic plan on established Kleingrass.

  • Timing between sprays: 6 to 8 weeks after the first application, if you have regrowth.

  • Rate for the second pass: 1.0 oz per acre (this keeps you within the annual max).

  • Label limits: Do not exceed 2.5 oz per acre per year, and do not make more than two applications per year to bermudagrass pastures. (Greenbook)

Expected percent control (real-world)

  • One application: about 60–75% suppression/control depending on stand age and growing conditions.

  • Two-application program: about 75–85% is a fair expectation when timing is right and the grass is actively growing.

If you want, I can also help you calculate total product needed for your acreage and the exact surfactant amounts based on your sprayer size.
