Traps and Bait Stations

Rodent Traps

Rodent traps are designed to capture or eliminate mice and rats in homes, businesses, and agricultural settings. They vary in mechanism, effectiveness, and humaneness, depending on the situation and preference.

Types of Rodent Traps & How They Work

Snap Traps (Traditional & Modern)

  • Examples: Wooden snap traps, plastic snap traps, expanded trigger snap traps.
  • Mode of Action:
    • Uses a spring-loaded bar that snaps down when the rodent triggers the bait plate.
  • Target Rodents: Mice & Rats.
  • Benefits:
    Quick kill, reducing suffering.
Reusable (plastic versions) or disposable (wooden).
    Cost-effective and easy to use.

Electronic Traps

  • Examples: Battery-powered rodent zappers.
  • Mode of Action:
    • Delivers a high-voltage shock, killing rodents instantly when they enter.
  • Target Rodents: Mice & Rats.
  • Benefits:
    Humane and fast kill.
    No mess or blood splatter.
Reusable and safe around children & pets (when used properly).

Live-Catch Traps (Humane Traps)

  • Examples: Multiple-catch mouse traps, cage traps, single-entry box traps.
  • Mode of Action:
    • Rodents enter through a one-way door or triggering mechanism and cannot escape.
  • Target Rodents: Mice & Rats.
  • Benefits:
    Non-lethal—allows for relocation.
    No poison or chemicals.
    Multiple-catch options available for infestations.
  • Downside: Rodents must be released far from structures to prevent return.

Glue Traps (Sticky Traps)

  • Examples: Flat glue boards, enclosed glue traps.
  • Mode of Action:
    • Rodents get stuck on an adhesive surface and cannot escape.
  • Target Rodents: Mice (less effective for rats due to size/strength).
  • Benefits:
Non-toxic and safe for chemical-sensitive areas.
    Low-cost and disposable.
Can capture insects, spiders, and lizards as well.
  • Downside: Considered inhumane as rodents may struggle before dying.

Multiple-Catch Traps

  • Examples: Tin Cat® multi-catch mouse trap, Ketch-All® trap.
  • Mode of Action:
    • Traps multiple mice in a chamber without killing them.
  • Target Rodents: Mice.
  • Benefits:
    Efficient for large infestations.
Reusable and durable (made of metal or plastic).
    No poison or chemicals.

Choosing the Right Trap

  • For Fast Elimination → Snap traps or electronic traps.
  • For Humane Capture & Release → Live traps or multi-catch traps.
  • For Large Infestations → Multiple-catch traps.
  • For Sensitive Areas (No Poisons) → Glue traps or electronic traps.

Rodent traps are an effective, targeted solution for rodent control, especially when used alongside sanitation and exclusion methods to prevent reinfestation.
