Best Management Practices (BMPs)

Food Sources:
Scorpions feed on insects such as crickets, cockroaches, spiders, and other small arthropods. Reducing these insect populations around homes and landscaping can limit scorpion activity.

Why September Sees More Scorpions:
Scorpions become more visible in September as cooler nights and still-warm days make them more active while searching for food and shelter before winter.

Control Products and Modes of Action:

Dusts:

  • Delta Dust (Deltamethrin 0.05%) sticks to the exoskeleton, disrupting the nervous system.
  • CimeXa Insecticide Dust (Silica gel) dehydrates scorpions and other insects in cracks and crevices.
  • Drione Insecticide Dust (Pyrethrins + silica gel + diatomaceous earth) fast knockdown, long residual.
  • Sevin Dust (Carbaryl) contact insecticide, effective for scorpions.

Liquid Concentrates:

  • Talstar Pro (Bifenthrin 7.9%) broad-spectrum, residual effect on perimeters and landscaping.
  • Suspend SC (Deltamethrin 4.75%) long-lasting residual, disrupts nervous system.
  • Tempo SC Ultra (Beta-Cyfluthrin 30.5%) fast knockdown, perimeter treatments.

Aerosols (Quick Knockdown and Targeted Treatments):

  • PT Pro Control II / CB 80 (Pyrethrins 0.50% + PBO 4%) rapid contact kill, disrupts insect nervous system.
  • D-Fence NXT (Novaluron 0.20% + Deltamethrin 0.06% + Pyriproxyfen 0.02%) combination action: interrupts chitin formation, nervous system disruption, and juvenile hormone mimic to prevent reproduction.
  • Suspend Aerosol (Deltamethrin 0.02% + Pyrethrins 0.10%) fast knockdown, long-lasting residual.

Glue Boards (Monitoring):

  • Non-toxic method to monitor scorpion activity and locate high-traffic areas to focus treatment.

Application Techniques:

  • Apply dusts lightly into cracks, voids, and under rocks or woodpiles.
  • Liquid concentrates: spray foundation edges, landscaping borders, and entryways evenly.
  • Aerosols: target doors, windows, garages, patios, and other high-traffic scorpion areas.
  • Wear gloves and follow label instructions.
  • Monitor with glue boards weekly to assess activity and adjust treatments.
