Weekly Insight Week 15
Growing Grass in the Desert Starts Here
April 5 - 11 , 2026
From My Side of the Counter
Today is Easter.
A time to reflect on our faith, our families, and the life we’ve been given.
We spend most of our days working. Taking care of business. Helping people. Staying busy. That’s part of it. But there has to be a balance.
Last Saturday, under a full moon at the start of spring, I had the opportunity to spend time in my yard. I know many of our team members were doing the same thing or simply spending time with their families.
We choose to work hard Monday through Friday.
And we choose to be closed on Saturdays.
Not because we couldn’t be open. We could do a lot of business on Saturdays. But we believe our team deserves time with their families. Time to work in their own yards. Time to step away.
We choose family over sales.
Living here in San Angelo, Texas is something we don’t take for granted. The land, the seasons, and the people are what make this place special.
At BES-TEX, we don’t see customers. We see people we know, people we help, people we care about.
In my life, I’ve always tried to keep things in order:
God, family, then business.
And today is a good reminder of why that matters.
What the Soil Temperature Is Telling Us
5-day soil average: 79.3°
That is strong, active soil.
At this temperature:
• Turf is growing aggressively
• Root systems are fully active
• Trees and shrubs are pushing growth
• Nutrient uptake is high
• Weed pressure is increasing
• Insect activity is beginning
This is no longer transition.
This is full growth.
What you do now is not about getting started.
It’s about managing what is already moving.
Weather and Moisture
We picked up another inch of rain Saturday morning, with more in the forecast.
The soil profile is wet.
That changes a few things:
• Pre-emergent activation is strong
• Weed germination will increase
• Ant activity will follow
• Irrigation needs to be adjusted
With moisture and warming soil, everything speeds up.
But remember, once the wind returns, things can dry out faster than expected.
Stay ahead of it.
What We’re Seeing Right Now
Turfgrass and Growth
Lawns are actively growing and filling in.
Mowing is consistent now.
Fertilization is appropriate as long as the grass is actively growing.
The rule still holds:
Three mowings = ready to feed
Choosing the Right Grass
We are getting more calls about sod and reworking lawns.
This is where decisions matter.
Not all grasses perform the same.
Bermuda (Common vs Hybrid)
• Common Bermuda is tougher, lower maintenance, more forgiving
• Hybrid Bermuda is finer, denser, more attractive, but requires more inputs
Zoysia
• Dense and slower growing
• Handles traffic well
• Requires less mowing but can be slower to recover
St. Augustine
• Better in shaded areas
• Requires more water
• More sensitive to stress and management
The right grass depends on:
• Sun vs shade
• Water availability
• Desired maintenance level
There is no perfect grass.
Only the right grass for the situation.
Preparation for Sod and Seed
We are seeing more interest in sod and Bermuda seed.
Preparation is everything.
• Proper grading
• Good soil contact
• Level surface
• Moisture management
You cannot fix poor preparation later.
Insects
With this moisture, expect ant activity to increase.
We are also hearing about people finding grubs while digging.
Right now, it is still early for curative grub control in most cases.
Timing matters with insects just like everything else.
Trees and Shrubs
With this rain and warm soil:
• Trees are leafing out
• Shrubs are pushing growth
• Roots are active
This is a good time for:
• Slow-release fertilization
• Mulch applications
• Soil improvement
Best Management Practices (BMPs)
Water Management After Rain
With recent rainfall:
• Reduce irrigation temporarily
• Monitor soil moisture
• Avoid overwatering
• Adjust as conditions change
Too much water is just as harmful as not enough.
Lawn Establishment Preparation
Before laying sod or seeding:
• Prepare the soil properly
• Ensure level grade
• Improve soil if needed
• Plan for consistent watering
Preparation determines success.
