Weekly Insight Week 16
Growing Grass in the Desert Starts Here
April 12 - 18 , 2026
From My Side of the Counter
We’re mid - April, and around here, that means decisions today shape what your landscape looks like by July. Even with some rain, Tom Green County is still dealing with ongoing drought. Managing soil moisture now is key not just for today but for when the real heat hits.
Some folks are still recovering from the stress of past seasons, and the choices we make now whether it’s irrigation timing, preparation for sod, or soil improvements set the stage.
What the Soil Temperature Is Telling Us
5 - day average: 73°F
Right now, growth is active. But this soil temperature also reminds us that summer is around the corner, and moisture management starts now. We don’t just think about today we think about July and August, when the heat will push your lawn to its limits. Start building healthy root systems now.
Fungus isn’t really a major threat at this time of year. Fungal issues tend to thrive later, with sustained humidity and warmer nighttime temps. Preventive steps now mean watering early in the day, maintaining airflow, and watching for stress as we move into summer.
What We’re Seeing Right Now
Some folks are still hesitant to scalp their Bermuda lawns, and others are still trying to control leftover winter weeds with herbicide. At this point, those winter weeds are fading on their own mow them down and focus on fertilizing your actively growing grass. Fertilizer is going out the door because we’re at that window feed when it’s green and actively growing, not before.
On the sod front, we’ve been moving truckloads, and that tells me people are ready to transform their lawns. My advice? Prep is everything. Whether it’s sod or seed, proper soil prep ensures success.
Topdressing, Aerification, and Soil Health
We know our soil pH runs high often around 8 to 8.5. That’s why topdressing with compost and aerifying to improve infiltration can help. Over time, it gives roots better access to nutrients.
Drought-tolerant grasses like Bermuda thrive here, but hybrids need more attention. Zoysia requires less frequent mowing but needs good soil prep. St. Augustine is shade-tolerant but needs consistent moisture.
Best Management Practices (BMPs)
Soil Health Steps
• Topdress with compost to improve structure
• Aerify to increase water infiltration
• Over time, this helps manage high pH and promotes stronger roots
Preventing Fungal Issues
• Fungus isn’t a major risk yet
• Preventive steps: water early, maintain airflow, avoid overwatering
• Watch for signs as humidity increases later in the season
