Who Taught You How to Work?
As Father's Day arrives, I wanted to take a break from talking about weeds, insects, fertilizer, and irrigation and simply share a thought.
Who taught you how to work?
For many of us, it was our father. For others, it may have been a grandfather, mother, grandmother, uncle, aunt, coach, teacher, mentor, employer, or friend. The title matters less than the impact they had on our lives.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the people who invested their time, wisdom, patience, and example into shaping who I became.
Many of life's most important lessons are not taught in a classroom. They are learned by watching someone else. We learn how to treat people, how to keep our word, how to handle adversity, how to take responsibility, and how to show up when we would rather not.
Those lessons are not just passed from fathers to sons. Daughters learn them too. In fact, some of the strongest, hardest-working, and most successful people I know are women who learned those values from fathers, mothers, grandparents, and mentors who set a good example and believed in them.
The lessons themselves are simple.
Work hard.
Be honest.
Take responsibility for your mistakes.
Treat people with respect.
Do what you say you're going to do.
Leave things better than you found them.
Those values apply whether you're raising a family, running a business, serving your community, building a career, or simply trying to be a good neighbor.
As a business owner, I have learned that success rarely happens overnight. It is built one day at a time through consistency, perseverance, and a willingness to keep moving forward when things become difficult.
In many ways, lawn and landscape management teaches a similar lesson. A healthy lawn is not built in a weekend. It comes from consistent care over time. The effort you put in today often shows up months later. The same can be said for our families, our businesses, and our communities.
This Father's Day, I encourage you to take a moment to think about the people who helped shape your journey. The fathers, father figures, mentors, and role models who stood beside you through life's ups and downs. If they are still with you, give them a call. If they are no longer here, take a moment to appreciate the impact they had on your life and the lessons they left behind.
And if you are now the person teaching those lessons to the next generation, whether as a parent, grandparent, mentor, coach, employer, or friend, remember that someone is watching. Your example matters more than you may ever know.
Most importantly, don't let this Father's Day pass without saying thank you to someone who helped make you who you are today.
From all of us at BES-TEX Supply, Happy Father's Day.
Thank you for allowing me to take a short break this week from lawn and landscape topics to recognize the people who have helped shape our lives. Next week we'll be back to lawn care tips, landscape advice, and strategies for surviving another hot West Texas summer.
If someone came to mind while reading this week's Weekly Insight, feel free to copy and paste it, forward it, or share it with them. Sometimes the most meaningful words we can say are simply, "Thank you."
