Winter Mower Storage Checklist
Recommended by BES-TEX Supply San Angelo, TX
Proper winter storage isn’t just about putting your mower away it’s about protecting your investment and ensuring it’s ready to fire up come spring. A few hours of care now can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs later. Follow this step-by-step guide from BES-TEX Supply to keep your mower in top condition through the off-season.
1. Clean the Mower Thoroughly
Before putting your mower up for the season, remove all grass clippings, dirt, and debris from under the deck, around the engine, and any moving parts.
-
Why it matters: Grass buildup traps moisture, which can lead to rust, corrosion, and even pest nesting.
-
How to do it: Use a scraper or putty knife to loosen caked-on debris, then rinse with a garden hose. Allow the mower to dry completely to prevent moisture damage.
2. Take Care of the Fuel System
Old fuel is one of the most common causes of mower problems in the spring.
-
Drain or run out the old fuel completely to prevent varnish buildup in the carburetor.
-
Add 1 quart of VP 4-Cycle Fuel (with a 2-year shelf life). Start and run the mower for a few minutes to circulate the clean fuel through the system.
-
Why it matters: Stale gasoline can clog jets, gum up the carburetor, and make starting nearly impossible next season. Fresh, stabilized fuel protects your system from ethanol damage.
3. Change the Oil
Drain the old oil and refill with fresh, clean oil before storing.
-
Why it matters: Old oil contains acids and contaminants that can cause internal corrosion during storage. A fresh oil change ensures your engine stays lubricated and clean through the winter.
4. Replace or Clean the Air Filter
Check your air filter and either replace it (paper type) or clean it (foam type with warm soapy water, then dry thoroughly).
-
Why it matters: A dirty air filter restricts airflow and can cause your engine to run rich, wasting fuel and reducing power. A clean filter means better starts and longer engine life.
5. Inspect and Service the Spark Plug
Remove the spark plug, inspect for corrosion or damage, and replace if needed.
-
Optional: Spray a bit of fogging oil into the cylinder and pull the starter cord once or twice before reinstalling the plug.
-
Why it matters: This prevents rust on internal parts and ensures reliable ignition when you start up next season.
6. Sharpen and Inspect the Blades
Examine your mower blades for dull edges, chips, or cracks. Sharpen or replace as needed.
-
After sharpening, lightly coat the blades with oil to prevent rust.
-
Why it matters: Sharp blades cut cleanly, protecting your lawn from disease and improving efficiency when mowing resumes.
7. Care for the Battery (If Equipped)
If your mower has a battery, disconnect it and store it indoors in a cool, dry place.
-
Use a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep it at optimal charge.
-
Why it matters: Batteries can discharge or freeze during winter storage, shortening their life. Proper care keeps them ready to go in the spring.
8. Check and Inflate Tires
Ensure tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.
-
Why it matters: Underinflated tires can develop flat spots when sitting for months. Proper inflation keeps your mower balanced and ready to roll.
9. Inspect Belts and Cables
Look over drive belts, pulleys, and control cables for cracks, fraying, or looseness.
-
Replace any worn or damaged parts now.
-
Why it matters: Preventive maintenance saves downtime and frustration when mowing season begins.
10. Choose a Proper Storage Location
Store your mower indoors if possible in a garage, shed, or other dry area.
-
If you must store it outside, use a high-quality tarp and elevate it off the ground.
-
Avoid dirt floors or humid spaces, which can accelerate rust and corrosion.
-
Why it matters: Moisture is your mower’s worst enemy. A dry, protected environment keeps all metal components from rusting and electrical systems safe.
